Ash Wednesday
Today is Valentine’s Day, but in the Philippines (and some other countries) people are also observing Ash Wednesday, which is one of the holy days in the Christian calendar.
-
observe – to celebrate
On Ash Wednesday, Christians (mostly Catholics) go to church and the priest draws a cross on their forehead during the mass. The cross is drawn using ash.
Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting, but I have never fasted on this day because it was never a tradition in my family to fast even though we are Christians.
-
fast – to not eat or drink all or some kinds of food or drink
Although I usually forget Ash Wednesday (every year it is on a different day), it is an important day for me.
