Word of the Year (Merriam-Webster)

Every English dictionary chooses its own Word of the Year. Last time I wrote about Oxford’s choice, youthquake. Today is about Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year 2017, feminism.

Merriam-Webster defines feminism as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” and “organized activity in support of women’s rights and intesests.”

Another, and easier, definition for the word is “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.”

As a woman who believes in the strength of women, I think Merriam-Webster made a wonderful choice. Also, there were a lot of events this year related to feminism so it’s very timely.
