I talked about sleep with one of my students today and we both feel the same way about it; when we don’t get enough sleep we feel tired and sleepy all day. But I know some of my students don’t get enough sleep. I’m surprised when I hear that some go to bed at 1:00 AM and get up at 7:00 AM or 6:30 AM.
I can’t imagine how tired they must be physically and mentally. I mean, they have classes in the morning and the early part of the afternoon, and then club practice after classes, and then cram school after club practice, and then homework after cram school. Sometimes they even have classes on Saturdays and club practice on Sundays. They also get a lot of homework during holidays.
It’s unbelievable and sometimes I wonder if students understand everything that’s being pushed into their brain when they obviously don’t get enough sleep or rest. I don’t know if it’s a bad thing, but I know that if I were a student in Japan with that kind of schedule, I would be stressed and unhappy, and I don’t think that’s a good thing.
