Evaluating Teachers

I searched for a topic for today’s post online and the one of the top search results was TOEFL writing topics so I got a question from the list to answer:

Schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

In my university, all professors were evaluated at the end of the semester by their students. If their evaluation score is low, they could be told to stop teaching the class or be given some penalties. I don’t know what happens if they get high evaluations but I guess they receive some sort of benefit.

Some students used the evaluations to get back at professors who they think aren’t good at teaching or waste a lot of time teaching unnecessary things. Students who also just personally hate their professor gave low evalutaions, or high evaluations if they are friends with or personally know their professor.

Biased judgement make evaluations a problem, but I think being evaluated is a good way for professors to do their best at their job and to be aware of their performance in their classes. It is also a way for them to get an idea of what students need and expect from them and how they should respond, so, yes, I agree that it should be done.
