In Advance!
Today is officially this year’s the last day of lessons in Inari-juku.
Last week one of my students asked how to say “よいお年を” in English. I don’t think there’s an exact translation because there’s no culture of greeting people differently at the end and beginning of a year in English-speaking countries, but maybe the closest translation is “Happy New Year in advance.”
“In advance” can be used for other greetings, too, like “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Birthday.”
This year has not been easy, but the end has come and the new year will begin soon. Hopefully it’ll be a better year for the world.
