Having fun?

Yesterday Inari-san asked me if a student taking one-to-one lessons is enjoying his class. It wasn’t the first time he asked me this question and as usual I said I didn’t know because I think it’s difficult to tell if a person is enjoying something unless they honstely say so. Matsutani-san said I can tell by their expression but I think people can smile or look interested even when they’re not.

I don’t like to assume what people feel by their expression alone. Of course it’s important that students enjoy the lesson but basically I think about what the students need instead of how much they should enjoy, and if I can help them with what they need without making the lesson too difficult or boring then perhaps the students will be interested.
