Most Common English Words (no. 13)

Not” is the next word on the list. It is an adverb (副詞) and it is used to make a word or a few words negative, or to give a word an opposite meaning.

  • She is not happy.
  • I will not tell her what you told me.
  • I think he is not bad looking. (= He is quite handsome)
  • Not that I’m angry (= I am angry), but why didn’t you do your chores?

That’s basically it for “not“. I think this is one of the easiest words to remember and understand in this list, but the next word is another preposition and it has a lot of usages.
