The House on Mango Street
Some time ago, a student donated books to the collection of Inari-juku and I promised I would read them so I’ll know who to recommend them to. I finished reading one last week and it’s entitled The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.
It’s fiction but based on the author’s childhood in the Latino section of Chicago. I thought the writing was beautiful, like poetry but not very complicated. I didn’t like the story so much because it was something I’ve heard of before, but I think people in 1984, when the book was published, might have appreciated it more.
Although the writing is simple, it might not be easy to understand because the author used a lot of figures of speech. Students who like poetry might like it but students who don’t might find it difficult and strange.
