Greedy

One of this week’s discussion is about trying something new for 30 days. In my lesson with Matsutani-san yesterday, I said there are many things I want to try, but he said there was nothing he wanted so there was nothing he wanted to try.

I was amazed because I think that if there is nothing you want to do then your life is basically perfect. On the other hand, he said I was greedy.

I was surprised again because I think greed is not a good thing.

greedy – having a selfish (利己的) desire to have more of something
    important

But I thought about it and I realized that being greedy isn’t always bad.

Maybe I am greedy. I want to learn the piano, karate, baking, cooking, French and painting, and I want to get better at writing, Japanese, and photography.

There are many things I want to learn and try because there are many things I want to be able to do.

Last week in class, we talked about learning English, and Matsutani-san said in the future there would be no need to learn English because a perfect translating machine will be invented.

I think a perfect translating machine will be useful, but I personally want to communicate with other people using my own mouth.

I want to bake my own bread when I feel like eating bread, I want to be able to defend myself when I have to, and I want to be able to speak Japanese with the people around me in this country. I want to be able to do more things for myself, and I think that’s okay.

So if you’re greedy to do something to improve yourself, then go for it. Try it. Do it. After all, why settle for less if we can be more?

settle for (something) – to accept something, or to decide to have something, although it is not the best
