Oink!
One of my students who’s in junior high wrote in his diary about animals sounds in Japanese and English. He wrote that in Japanese dogs say “wan wan”, but in English they say “bow wow”. In Japanese pigs say “buu buu”, but in English “oink”.
He think “oink” is strange, but I think “buu buu” is strange. Also, I think “oink” sounds cute. Here are other animal sounds that are different:
- CAT: nyaa nyaa (Japanese), meow (English)
- ROOSTER: kokekokko (Japanese), cock-a-doodle-doo (English)
- SHEEP: mee mee (Japanese), baa baa (English)
- FROG: kero kero (Japanese), ribbit (English)
