The 21st most common English word is “this“. As a pronoun it is used to show which person, object, idea, etc. is being talked about:
- This is the book I want to read.
- You need milk for this recipe.
“This” can also be used as an adverb and it means “as much as shown”:
- If I had known summer would be this hot here, I would have gone to Hokkaido instead.
- She jumped this high.
