To Read

I spoke to a student today about books and she told me I should read books written in Japanese. I tried to read children’s books but they’re still quite difficult for me because there are a lot of words I don’t know. I’m not reading any now, but reading Japanese books is one of the things I would like to do when I get better at Japanese. I don’t know which books are famous in Japan but I already know what kind of books I want to read:

1. Books about the Pacific War
I just finished listening to an audio book about the Pacific War. I liked it a lot because it was very moving, but the book was written by an American and it was mostly about the experiences of an American soldier so its basically from an American point of view. I want to read a book from a Japanese’s point of view too.

2. A Haruki Murakami book
I’ve read a Haruki Murakami book and I disliked it a lot. In fact, after I read the book I decided I would never read another book from him again. But he is quite famous so there must a reason for that and perhaps if I read a book of his in Japanese my opinion of him and his work might change.

3. A best-selling fantasy book
Fantasy books are my favorite and one day I would like to read a fantasy book written in Japanese.
